INDIA is elected to the ECOSOC
(Economic and Social Council)
India has been elected to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for fourth consecutive term for 2026-2028.
India secured 181 out of 187 votes in favour.
It will mark India to 18th time of getting elected to UNs Economic and Social Council.
Economic and Social Council
Economic and Social Council is the heart of the United Nations machinery to advance the 3D( Three dimensions of Sustainable Development) 1. Economic, 2. Social and 3. Environmental.
Its members are elected by General Assembly for overlapping three years of term.

Objectives of ECOSOC:
1. Raise living standards and promote full employment: ECOSOC works to ensure economic well-being and job creation worldwide through policy support.
2. Address economic, social, and health challenges: It tackles global poverty, inequality, and health crises through coordinated UN efforts and partnerships.
3. Foster cultural and educational cooperation: Encourages international collaboration to advance education and preserve cultural heritage.
4. Promote human rights and fundamental freedoms: Advocates for civil liberties and social justice as foundations for global peace and development - Functions of ECOSOC: There are several important functions to be performed by ECOSOC. These are listed below:
1. Coordinates 15 UN Specialized Agencies: Ensures policy alignment across agencies like WHO, ILO, and FAO to advance global development goals.
2. Oversees 8 functional and 5 regional commissions: Facilitates intergovernmental dialogue on social, economic, and regional development issues.
3. Acts as a central forum for socio-economic policies: Provides a global platform for member states to discuss and recommend economic and social policies.
4. Hosts the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF): Monitors the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through annual ministerial reviews.
5. Holds joint sessions with IMF & World Bank: Aligns UN development strategies with global financial systems for better policy coherence.
United Nations Organisation
United Nations Organisation(UNO) was established on October 24th, 1945 by signing the UN Charter by 51 founder members. At present it has total 193 member countries. South Sudan was the latest country to join UN in 2011.
It marked 24th October as the UN Day and hence celebrated.
Remember India also joined UN on 30th October 1945.
UN is a global peace keeping body with primary objective of mediating the war like situations between countries and to stop any of the possible war. If further the war broke out it defends the suffered country. The UN’s objective is to prevent international conflict and to
facilitate cooperation among states. It was founded with the hope that it would act to stop the conflicts between states escalating into war and, if war broke out, to limit the extent of hostilities.

Out of the above six organs General Assembly and Security Council have major role to play in negotiating with the key controversies. Besides these principal organs there are several key agencies of UN as well that play distinct functions at global level. These are UNHRC, UNICEF, UNESCO, WHO, UNDP and UNHCR.
Security Council: In the UN Security Council, there are five permanent members.
These are: United States, Russia, United Kingdom, France and China.
Ground of selection as permanent members: These states were selected as permanent members as they were the most powerful immediately after the Second World War and because they constituted the victors in the War.
